Death Knight

Unholy

dpsmeleeeasy difficulty

Playstyle

Two-Handed plate DPS built around diseases and pets — summons armies of undead minions and infects enemies with multiple plagues. Very bursty in both single-target and AoE. Among the simplest specializations in the game, which makes it easy to pick up but can feel bland over time.

Incredible damage in short burst windows

Season 2 Tier Set

Baleful Grave-Knight's Crucible

2

Your Magus of the Dead and Lord of the Dead cast a more powerful Necrotic Bolt instead of Frostbolt, and Withering Grasp instead of Shadow Bolt.

4

Necrotic Bolt's damage is increased by 130%, and Withering Grasp's damage is increased by 130%, against enemies below 35% health.

+ The Good

Incredible damage in short burst windows

Strong active and passive survivability

− The Bad

Explicitly low Mythic+ utility relative to other classes

One of the slowest melee specs in the game (low mobility, alongside Paladins)

Low skill ceiling cuts both ways — approachable early on, but the limited decision-making wears thin over a long play session

Hero talents

Rider of the Apocalypse

Frost & Unholy hero tree. 90s burst windows (Apocalypse Now via Frostwyrm's Fury), less setup/execution than San'layn, and fills a mobility gap the class doesn't usually have. The easier of the two to pick up.

San'layn

Unholy & Blood hero tree. 45s cooldown-focused windows built around Essence of the Blood Queen stacks; favored for high-end Mythic+ once you can reliably hit the build-up/execution requirements. Self-healing makes the spec very hard to kill.
